My Personal Website

Overview

Recognizing the need for a professional, modern, and engaging platform to effectively showcase my work, share technical insights, and create a user experience that reflects my development philosophy, I initiated the project to build this personal portfolio website.

As the sole developer and designer, I managed all aspects of this project from conception to deployment. My responsibilities encompassed:

  • Architecture and technology selection

  • UI/UX design and implementation

  • Frontend development and backend development for features like portfolio, blog, & reflections

  • Content strategy and creation

  • Performance optimization and testing

  • Deployment and ongoing maintenance

The primary goal of this project was to design and develop a modern web application that not only showcases my technical skills and completed projects but also serves as a platform for sharing insights and articles related to my field. Secondary objectives included creating a highly performant, accessible, and maintainable website that I could easily update and expand over time.

The design philosophy centered on a clean, minimalist aesthetic that allows the content – my projects and writings – to take center stage. Emphasis was placed on intuitive navigation, readability, and a user-friendly experience across all devices. Responsive design was approached with a mobile-first methodology, ensuring a consistent and accessible experience regardless of screen size.

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge: Most of the initial challenges were related to setting up IAM and the API infrastructure on AWS. CORS was a learning experience when setting it up the first time. IAM is always tricky because missing one small detail can throw off the entire solution.

Outcomes

  1. Successfully launched a fully functional, high-performance personal portfolio website, accessible at www.philiplaussermair.com.

  2. Developed a maintainable and scalable codebase, primarily using TypeScript for type safety and improved developer experience.

  3. Created a flexible content management system (or process) that allows for easy and efficient updates to projects and blog entries.

  4. Established a professional online platform that effectively showcases my technical expertise, project experience, and thought leadership.

  5. Deepened my practical understanding of server-side rendering and static site generation with Next.js.

  6. Gained valuable end-to-end project management experience, from initial concept and design through development, testing, and deployment of a complete web application.

  7. Enhanced my UI/UX design skills by focusing on creating an intuitive, accessible, and visually appealing user journey.

  8. Reinforced the importance of clean code, component-based architecture, and writing maintainable software.

  9. Further developed my ability to articulate technical concepts and project details clearly through content creation for the site itself.
